Digital moms are not a niche market. According to Nielsen NetRatings, 32 million women in the U.S. have children ages 18 and under and go online; of those women, 84%, or 27 million, interact with emerging technologies.

For the purposes of this report, Razorfish surveyed 1,500 "digital moms"--defined as women with at least one child under 18 in the home who have engaged with two or more emerging technologies and who have researched, sought advice or purchased a product online in the last three months. Results confirm digital moms have moved beyond email and search, and are now active users of Web 2.0 technologies. The majority of moms are using social networks (65%) and text messaging (56%). More than half of these moms are also gamers, with 52% of them playing games online or via a console.

A particularly interesting trend is the rise of mobile browsing, said Terri Walter, vice president of emerging media at Razorfish and author of the Razorfish study. While only 10% of digital moms use mobile browsing, the women who do use it say it has more influence than other media channels as they get closer to a buying decision.

"This finding is significant," Walter said. "It predicts the profound impact that mobile browsing and perhaps shopping applications will likely have on peoples' buying decisions as more people adopt smartphones."

Razorfish's Key Findings for Marketers:

  • Moms with children 12 and older are motivated to adopt new technologies to stay in tune with their children. Of those who use social networks and blogs, almost half (47% and 40%, respectively) monitor their children. Likewise, digital moms of children 12 and older, versus moms with children under 12, are more likely to watch online video, (40% vs. 34%), game (57% vs. 51%), read online consumer reviews (38% vs. 30%), and watch or listen to podcasts (13% vs. 9%); This trend can be explained by different leisure time patterns among women with older children and a compelling interest in understanding their teenage children's digital lives.
  • The gap is closing between TV and digital channels in terms of creating awareness and affecting product decisions, and social influence channels are increasingly important. Although TV still has the most impact on creating initial awareness for a product (31%), social influence channels such as online consumer reviews, blogs, social network sites and RSS are highly influential in the learning/researching stage (29%).
  • Moms' interests are broad; some interests change by life stage, and some do not. More moms show interest in clothing/fashion and food than in parenting information, with the exception of moms with children under six.

Part Two: Connecting with Digital Mom through Social Networks

CafeMom conducted a companion study of 1,740 active members of CafeMom, combined with CafeMom behavioral and usage data, to achieve a deeper understanding of how and why moms are using social media, and its impact on shopping behavior and purchase decisions.

The study found that moms are spending more time on social networks than ever before, turning to them for social, recreational and informational purposes. Once part of a social network, these moms are not just passive consumers, but active participants in activities such as blogging, photo-sharing, engaging in group discussions and building communities based on similar interests.

"With the rise of social networking, moms are becoming less dependent on traditional media and brand advertising to inform purchase decisions," said Laura Fortner, SVP of marketing and insights at CafeMom and author of the CafeMom study. "Marketers can extend brand engagement by interacting with moms in their space and leveraging their influence within their social networks."

CafeMom identified five distinct segments of socially connected moms. Highlights of the report's observations and recommended marketing approaches for each segment include:

  • The Self Expressor typically has a preschooler at home and is eager to chat with other moms about parenting and shopping-related matters. She spends a lot of time building her personal profile page, so marketers should explore ways to be included on her virtual real estate and take advantage of viral pass-along.
  • The Utility Mom typically has the most children at home of all the segments, yet spends the most time online each week and enjoys relaxing with games and quizzes. To reach the Utility Mom, marketers should align with entertaining widgets and send brand messages through influential women in her circle.
  • The Groupster is a dynamic builder of online communities and seeks purchasing information and advice from her wide social circle, which includes moms she does not know offline. Claire Dockens was dead. Wow, that was a shock. When Kyle told me I almost dropped right on the spot. How often is it that someone you've known for years, worked with in the trenches, whose house you've been to several times, drops dead? She wasn't even that old – like early fifties.

If that weren't enough of a bombshell, Kyle's next revelation definitely put me over the edge – "And they say she was murdered." At that point I think I did lose consciousness for a second or two – not enough to make me actually hit the floor – but I'm sure, moments later, I wasn't facing in exactly the same direction as I had been before my momentary lapse.

The next thought that entered my shock-addled head was, "I wonder if they'll suspect me? I mean, it's not like I could stand her."    

Then, Kyle said, "Gosh, I hope they won't think I did it."

Kyle Thoroughgood was my colleague and friend at Marcel, the oldest and most revered advertising and marketing consulting firm in Omaha, Nebraska. We'd both been colleagues of the victim a few years prior, and the day that Claire tendered her resignation had been an occasion of mutual celebration. Her mere existence had elicited an intense aggravation in both Kyle and me. She'd openly sought to condemn and abuse us for her own personal sport. With Claire as a colleague, we definitely hadn't needed any enemies. Truthfully, Kyle and I were but two of her multitude of victims since verbally abusive banter was her preferred pastime, but with the two of us she'd taken it to a level beyond. She had elevated her abuse to an art form.

That's when we both heaved a sigh of relief. Hell, the list of suspects would be monumentally huge! Sure we'd be on it – but undoubtedly we'd get lost in the shuffle of characters with sufficient motive.

"So how'd they do it?" I tentatively pressed.

"Bludgeoned as she was leaving a charity dinner," Kyle offered.

"Oh god, that really could have been any of us," I shuddered. "With what?"

Still nodding Kyle responded, "Hasn't been released yet. I don't think they're sure. From what I know they haven't found the weapon and the autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow morning."

"Oh yeah, how'd you find out?"

"Facebook."

That's when my partner Liv walked by with her third coffee of the morning. "Gotta run – late for a meeting," she tossed out, and then, "Shit, does coffee come out of silk?" As she frantically swiped at the growing brown stain on her new couture blouse.    

"Hey," Kyle pursued "hear about Claire?"

"I read it on Facebook at 2 a.m. last night when I was finishing the proposal for this meeting. Her poor family!"

Benicia's beloved Honey and Cheese Pairing Festival is an annual fundraising event where participants get to sample the finest local cheeses and honey for a good cause. This year's festival will be held on Saturday, May 14th from 6 to 9pm under the shared new roof of Shirocos and Piccolo, two downtown stores that recently moved to 216 First Street, along Benicia's beautiful waterfront. Donations for the tickets and all funds collected through a silent auction and other activities during the evening will be used to help support Benicia's James Lemos Community Pool to keep the pool and its swim programs afloat.

The more than 200 expected participants will be provided a complimentary glass of wine and be able to bid on silent auction items. The first honey and cheese pairing event in 2009 was a great success, and raised several thousand dollars for the Benicia Education Foundation. Since its first year, the event has had a major impact on Shore and Martinez. They have used the experience to collaborate on a book called Green Gold: Pairing the World's Honeys & Cheeses. It is the first publication of its kind, and will be available for purchase at the event. A portion of proceeds from book sales will be used to help the James Lemos Community Pool as well.

Shirocos features local, regional and national home and gourmet items to showcase area talents and the affordability of ideas from across the globe. Piccolo is one of Benicia's finest and most contemporary women's clothing boutiques. By joining forces, Piccolo and Shirocos believe they are developing a new kind of anchor store for small towns. Rabaiotti of Maffe Financial Group, who helps woman plan for their future financial goals, and Marybeth Mainelli of MBM Insurance Resource Center who works with company's insurance needs.

Ilaine Bednarik kicked off the meeting at 6:00pm by welcoming all in attendance. In order for the group to get to know each other better, each member went around the table with a brief introduction of themselves and their companies. The group then talked about the benefits and what they wish to gain from NAPW.

Beth wanted to share an inspirational quote with everyone after they introduced themselves and networked. She felt this was a great way to start the meeting and relay information she felt every professional women should abide by. "Creating a positive living women's coats space leads to a positive working environment," she said.

Next on the agenda the group shared ideas and discussed the importance of increasing the growth of attendance within the Chapter.

"With this being our first meeting, it is important to discuss various ways to increase growth in attendance for both existing and new members for future meetings," said Ilaine.

Everyone agreed to work together to recruit guests and encourage existing members to attend the next meeting in April. It was decided that the four members would divide up the member list and make phone calls to each and every member to extend the invitation to both meetings in April. Ilaine also told the group she would send monthly messages via the Message Center to ensure that all members would be reached.

"We could come up with a theme for the meeting in May, in which one member would be given 30 minutes to pitch their business," said Ilaine.

Everyone in attendance agreed the first meeting was a success and expressed their excitement about the growth that will potentially happen from this meeting forward.
